Firstable , as soon as you arrive to Galeâo International Airport ( also very well known as Tom Jobim Airport ) get the " Real " bus transport and ask to the driver to drop you in Flamingo neighborhood near by Catete ( an old governavent building when Rio was the Brazilian Capital ). There you may find many hotels ( not luxury ones ) with good room prices.
Once in Flamingo, the subway is close at hand to travel up to Copacabana beach or Ipanema. Try and get the combination to Largo Machado and be dropped in Cosme Velho to get the train tour up to Cristo Redentor. Or be dropped in " Estació " with the combination line and visit Maracaná, the famoust brazilian socker field.
By the way, there are bus transports you may have in Flamingo to go to Pan de Azúcar.
During the afternoon you may walk from Catete Palace in search of Lapa neighborhood . There are a lot of night alive music pubs, discoteques, and restaurants there. The walking takes just ten minutes, but if it´s to dark better have a cab ride !!
