Dar Fillettaro. Roma, Near Campo dei Fiore
This is a really interesting, no frills fish shop. If you are interested in trying deep fried cod fish fillets (a Roman specialty - Baccala) dar Fillettaro should not be missed.
It's informal and it's no frills. People crowd into the narrow, deep dining room and spill out into the tables set up in the cul-de-sac next to the Chiesa Santa Barbara.
If you make it inside you’ll see large Roman women frying the fish in giant cauldrons. There are a few starters, and a clean, fresh white wine by the pitcher. I recommend having the puntarella salad with anchovy dressing. Puntarella as I understand it is a wild or field green. It is slightly bitter and is similar to water cress in appearance and goes very well with the cod.
This old-time, quirky fish shop is definitely worth the time if you enjoy this type of thing as I do. It’s just steps from the Campo dei Fiore at Lergo dei Librari 88 a short cul-de-sac off Via Guibbonari. Note: Dar Fillettaro is open only in the evening certain nights of the week.
Also in the neighborhood: You will only be a few blocks from the Palazzo Farnese. This impressive building on the Piazza Farnese is just a couple of blocks east of the Campo dei Fiore. It currently houses the French Embassy and is the product of 3 architects: Sangallo the Younger, Michelangelo and Giacomo della Porta.
