Day 1
A 1 hour domestic flight took us from Bangkok to the idealistic old city of Chiang Mai, capital of the old Lanna kingdom in Thailand’s north. We checked into a guesthouse on the artistic Nimanheim rd. This area is full of cool cafes, shops and funky little bars – while being close to the ‘old city’ part of Chiang Mai. We spent that night bargain hunting at the Chiang Mai night market – a must see if you get to Chiang Mai.

Day 2
Next day we headed to ‘Tony’s big bikes’ (+66 053 752 960), where I was hiring the motorbike we would spend the next week travelling around on. Tony was very helpful and let me try all his bikes to find the best for us. We selected a Honda Phantom and were ready to head out.
After the first 2 hours on highway 118 from Chaing Mai we reached the fantastic Rong Khun Temple, An eclectic buddhist temple near Chiang Rai that is the creation of Chalermchai Kositpipat, Thailand´s Gaudi. This amazing temple is full of pop-culture references and depicts the artist’s idea of Nirvana.
Another 1 hour saw us arrive in Chaing Rai, where we enjoyed the relaxed vibe and street shows over our dinner.
This stretch of road, highway 118, is pretty easy going, good for cruising at 100 km/hr. It is a well labeled (in English) highway that joins Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the total ride time being about 3 – 3 ½ hours.

Day 3
Next day we were up early to head in to the Mountainous area of Doi Mae Salong (Follow route 1234).
