Carcassonne is one of the most beautiful mediaeval towns we have visited. Built over the ruins of a former Roman Fortress, Carcassonne was the "theatre" of the crusades against the heretics in the 13th century.
r The mediaeval old town is one of UNESCO's world's heritage. The town has 52 towers and two rings of walls making a total of 3 km. of battlements. There is no restriction on access to this area of the city. Some of the houses are paid museums, but as we were travelling with small children we just decided to wonder around the town enjoying the atmosphere.
We stopped for lunch in one of the restaurants and we had a delicious cassoulet, a speciality of the area.
